Learning goal: To make and compare three different types of macaroni and cheese based on levels of convenience.
250 mL macaroni
15 mL margarine
15 mL flour
dash of pepper
175 mL milk
125 mL grated cheddar cheese
Macaroni
Turn oven to 450ºF.
Bring 1 L of water to a boil in a medium sized saucepan on max heat.
Add macaroni, stir with a wooden spoon and boil for 10 minutes or until soft.
Drain water from macaroni and stir macaroni into cheese sauce.
Pour into a casserole dish with a lid.
Bake at 400ºF for 15 minutes.
Cheese sauce
Melt margarine in a small saucepan over low heat.
Remove pan from heat and place on counter (on hot pad or pot holder).
Add flour and pepper. With a wooden spoon, stir until smooth.
Add 1/4 cup milk slowly at first, stirring constantly to make a smooth paste.
Stir in the rest of the milk, keep stirring until there are no lumps.
Return pot to stove. Cook stirring constantly until sauce has boiled gently and has become thickened.
Remove sauce from stove, add grated cheese. Stir until melted.
